Zen Practice II: Meeting a Teacher and the Bodhisattva Precepts

This class meets once each month, coinciding with Zen Center’s Day of Reflection. Combining zazen, liturgy and group study, the Day of Reflection offers an opportunity to become more familiar with the precepts—the moral and ethical teachings of Zen Buddhism. Beginning at 8am, the class meets to review any questions that may be arising about zazen or zendo protocol. We’ll then talk about the pivotal role the teacher-student relationship plays in many Buddhist traditions, but particularly Zen. During the two zazen periods that follow, class participants are invited to meet one-on-one with a Zen Center teacher to discuss their practice and any questions they may have.

Also during the sitting periods, the sangha will collectively read out loud the 16 Bodhisattva Precepts, a core element of Zen. There will also be a short talk by a Zen Center member who will address one of those precepts specifically.

Following zazen (and a snack break that includes tea and coffee), everyone re-gathers in the Dharma Hall. There we use the practice of Council to reflect and share together on the precept that was discussed earlier.

Prerequisite: Participants must have taken Part 1 of the Intro to Zen Meditation class —in person—within the previous 3 months.
