Zen Practice III: Gate of Sweet Nectar and Zazen

Anyone who has taken our Zen Practice I class in person is welcome to join us for zazen anytime, to sign up for a retreat, and to participate in one of our liturgy services. However, this class—offered one Sunday each month—offers those newer to the Zen Center an opportunity to learn more about Zen liturgy, and to participate in one of our most dynamic services.

Participants will meet with an instructor at 8am to learn about the function of service and how it fits into Buddhist practice. This time can also be used for questions about zendo etiquette in case anything is unclear. Then at 8:30, everyone will take part in the Gate of Sweet Nectar, the 30-minute chanting service we hold each Sunday morning. The Gate of Sweet Nectar is based on a traditional Soto Zen liturgy that is still practiced throughout Japan and many places where Zen has taken root around the world. After the service, the class will sit together for one period and then join others int he zendo for a second period of zazen. Participants will be able to see a teacher privately during zazen if they have taken Zen Practice II. There is a 30 minute break from 10:30 to 11am, followed by a Dharma talk by a teacher or senior student.

Pre-requisite: Participants must have taken the Zen Practice I class  in person.
